Comprobaremos si los conceptos que definen la globalización, sobre todo en su vertiente económica, podrían aplicarse al imperio azteca. Donde surgieron poderosos «lobbys» de comerciantes con leyes especiales que les beneficiaban. Se incentivaba la economía obligando a los mercados a especializarse, con el consiguiente beneficio para los consumidores. Se iniciaron guerras con el objetivo de controlar los mercados más importantes. Se intentó crear una moneda única y se dejaba constancia de todos estos procesos en los registros «informáticos» de la época, los preciosos códices mesoamericanos. Así pues, podemos afirmar que la economía actuaba como elemento integrador o globalizador en el desarrollo del imperio azteca, allá por el siglo XVI, y la famosa frase de Porfirio Díaz «pobre México tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de EE.UU.» podría haber sido dicha por Moctezuma Xocoyotzin: «pobres chichimecas tan lejos de sus dioses y tan cerca de Tenochtitlan…..

The present article attempts to verify whether the concepts that define globalization, particularly from an economic perspective, might be applied to the Aztec empire, where powerful lobbies» of merchants induced the adoption of special laws that favoured their interests. These incentives stimulated the economy, forcing market specialization, with the consequent benefits for consumers. Wars were waged to control the most important markets. A single currency was created, whose transactions constitute the «computer» records of the age, the invaluable meso-American codices. It can consequently be sustained that the economy was an integrating or globalizing element in the development of the Aztec empire in the 16th century. Porfirio Díaz’s famous lament «poor Mexico, so far from God and so near the US» would have suited Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, who might well have muttered: «Poor Chichimecas, so far from their gods and so near the Tenochtitlan»…..
